Inflammations of the intestine are chronic diseases affecting the large intestine and/or tracts of the digestive tract. In recent years, it has been seen a significant increase in the percentage of patients with IBS (inflammatory bowel syndrome) and IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), whose symptoms seem to intensify at certain times of the year or with certain dietary styles.

Given the increased levels of attention to this issue, at Vifra, over the past year, we have focused on an innovative solution that exploits the synergy between tryptophan and Lb. Reuteri.

TRIPTOPHAN: what it is

Tryptophan is an amino acid found in various animal and plant proteins and plays a key role in growth, having the function of regulating the composition of the microbiota in the large intestine.

A recent study reports on the mechanism of tryptophan’s effects.

LB REUTERI: what it is

Lactobacillus reuteri is a Gram-positive bacterium. As its name suggests, it uses lactose to develop. This bacterium is present in:

  • gastrointestinal tract;
  • vaginal mucosa;
  • oral cavity.

This bacterium produces antimicrobial substances that inhibit the growth of certain Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, or Gram-positive bacteria, while preventing the destruction of intestinal flora and lactic acid bacteria. Lactobacillus reuteri is also active against parasites responsible for severe diarrhoea.

Lactobacillus reuteri contributes to digestive well-being.

This bacterial strain has been shown to be effective both in the prevention of intestinal infections and in the treatment of diarrhoea caused by rotavirus.

Although Lactobacillus reuteri is involved in building the microbiota of infants during breastfeeding, its action goes beyond the gastrointestinal sphere, as this bacterium also plays a key lifelong role in cardiovascular health by helping to reduce levels of bad cholesterol.

Tryptophan and L.B. REUTERI: What they are used for

The synergy between Tryptophan and L.B. Reuteri is particularly effective in preventing and improving symptoms of 2 types of syndromes:

  1. IBS
  2. IBD

IBS

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a debilitating chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder not associated with organic or inflammatory changes characterised by:

  1. abdominal pain
  2. altered intestinal activity in the absence of a specific and unambiguous organic pathology.

It is also referred to as spastic colitis or irritable bowel syndrome.

In most subjects with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, the contractions of the intestinal muscles are longer and more intense. The gastric content is, therefore, pushed more rapidly towards the intestine and causes pain, gas, bloating and, last but not least, diarrhoea. However, in other individuals the exact opposite happens, resulting in delayed passage of food and the appearance of hard, dehydrated faeces. The causes of the onset of Irritable Bowel Syndrome are not yet known but can be traced to 3 elements:

  1. some believe that IBS is due to an alteration in the nerves that control muscle contractions or sensitivity of the intestine;
  2. others believe that the central nervous system can affect both parts;
  3. More recent studies would also identify as a possible cause the hormonal changes linked, for example in the case of women, to the menstrual cycle.

IBD

IBD stands for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, or Chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

IBD refers to 2 main diseases:

  1. Ulcerative Colitis, the most frequent symptom of which is rectal bleeding, increasingly less often mistaken for a haemorrhoidal disease, less associated with a sense of shame than it used to be in the past, and the greater availability of endoscopic investigations, also leads the patient to seek a rapid diagnostic answer for fear of developing more serious diseases;
  2. Crohn Disease, which on the contrary is more often associated with diarrhoea, abdominal pain or weight loss and is sometimes misinterpreted as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Both UC (Ulcerative Colitis) and CD (Crohn Disease) are diseases that significantly alter the quality of life.

Today the assessment of life quality is a very important aspect of patient care, in any age group, from children to the elderly.

IBS TRIPRTOBIOTIC: the vifra supplement that exploits synergy

ibs triptobiotic

To find an effective answer to the symptoms of the inflammations mentioned above, at Vifra we have created an innovative formula that exploits the synergy between tryptophan and LB. Reuteri: IBS Triptobiotic. This is a food supplement with a new formulation designed to provide a balanced and effective response to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS); thanks to the combination of Tryptophan and Lactobacillus Reuteri, this supplement can stimulate both the endogenous and probiotic sides thanks to the presence of three ingredients:

  1. TRIPTOPHAN: is an essential amino acid for the human body that allows the synthesis of hormones and vitamins such as serotonin, melatonin and niacin, cofactors of important biological functions such as mood and sleep;
  1. LACTOBACILLUS REUTERI: is a probiotic which can metabolise tryptophan (Trp) into indole derivatives, including indole-3-lactic acid, which is responsible for the intestinal immune response by activating the aryl-hydrocarburic receptor (AhR), which in turn stimulates factors regulating intestinal immunity and inflammation. Together, these two powerful ingredients contribute to the prevention and improvement of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms by activating physiological tissue repair mechanisms, resulting in a significant improvement in symptoms.
  1. ZINC AND PASSIFLORA: two nutraceutical ingredients that together enhance the action of opposing inflammation of intestinal tissue, thus improving the patient’s quality of life.

IBS TRIPTOBIOTIC is indicated for the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a common condition affecting the digestive system (it affects 15% of the Italian population with a 4:1 female-to-male ratio). It is effective in preventing and reducing the symptoms of IBS such as stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation, which appear and disappear over time and last for days, weeks or months. IBS TRIPTOBIOTIC is a supplement in the VIFRAINTEGRA line and is a valuable aid against inflammation of the intestine.
